Dog Days of Summer

Nikon D7000, Nikon 28-300 @ 230mm. ISO 200. f/11 @ 1/320 sec.
Well, at least someone on the paddle board was having a grand time. It is not as clear if her dogs were sharing in her enjoyment. She was paddling along in a protected area while all the athletes were wind surfing and kite boarding in 20 knot winds on the Columbia in Hood River. Don't you just dig the matching life vests? Dog's names, from left to right are: Dude, Doodles and Elvis. Honest. And no one fell off. Amazing!

4th of July in Hood River

Nikon D800, Nikon 24-70mm lens at 70mm. ISO 200. f/11 at 4.3 sec.

I know, it has been way too long since I posted any images. There are more to come.
This image was taken from up on the hill in White Salmon, WA, on a wonderful spot that I had scouted out earlier in the day. There was only another couple there so it was pretty secluded. It is interesting to shoot fireworks, because you wait until you see something, then hold the shutter open using the "bulb" setting, and then close it when you think best. Needless to say, not every exposure works, but I did like this one and I hope that you do also. Have a great summer!

Some Sunset Drama

Nikon D700, Nikon 16-35mm @35mm. f/11 at 1/4000 sec. ISO 200

Another rainy day in Seattle gave way to a bit of light behind the clouds near sunset. Then the sun came out behind the dense black cloud. I like the drama of the black and white. There wasn't much color anyway.

Late afternoon indoor tulips

Nikon D700, Nikon 200 Micro lens. f/4.2 at 1/250 second, ISO 400.

The assignment for the week was to use natural lighting as it happened to appear. Seattle has been a bit dark and moist, but the sun came out late in the afternoon and provided some illumination through the kitchen window. Unfortunately the tripod was getting in the way of dinner preparation, but I was allowed enough time to get in a few shots. This is one of them. And yes, per usual, dinner was wonderful! I'm a lucky boy.

Olympics Breaking Forth

Nikon D700, Nikkor 16-35mm lens @ 24mm. ISO 200, f/11 @ 1/1000 SEC

I was heading off to work yesterday morning and happened to look West, and saw the early morning sun on the Olympics, with a dense cap of clouds overhead. I buzzed around the block and snapped off a few shots. This cropped image was from one of those pictures. Despite an unusually wet spring, this is still a pretty darn nice part of the world. Happy Easter!

Guardians of Sunset

Nikon D700. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens @ 24mm. ISO 400, f/8 at 1/500 sec.

It has been pretty gray and rainy for the past few days. We did get a late afternoon break today, so I headed down to Carkeek and walked north up the ridge. The colors here are not compelling, but I like the strength of the trees bracketing the scene.

The city at dusk.

Nikon D700, Nikon 24-70mm lens at 55mm. f/8 at 1/15 sec on tripod. ISO 400.

This has been a teasingly nice weekend, with sun and temperatures into the high 50's.
I was torn between doing more sunset images versus taking shots from West Seattle looking east back at the city as the light reflected off of the buildings. Looking east won out, and this is one of the many images. I will post more later at my website, www.terryrogersphotography.com.
Have a great week!

North Shore of Kaua'i

Nikon D7000 Nikon 18-200 lens at 18mm. ISO 200, 1/400 sec @ f/8.0

After a couple days of rain, it was a perfect day for a helicopter ride. This is one of many images from the morning, and I will post more on my website and direct you there when it is ready.
Lovely scenery and a wonderful flying experience with the doors off to better enjoy the view. Aloha!

Kaua'i Color

There is something about the quality of light and the vibrancy of color on this island. These two images were taken at the western edge of Kaua'i and are unedited. I used a polarizing filter, but otherwise this is how the eyes (and the camera) see the scenes. Interestingly, the 7000 acres of sugar cane are being converted to corn (although these rows are cane) to make ethanol, and the last cane processing facility was closed two years ago.

Kauai Sunset

Nikon D7000, Nikon 10-24mm lens at 10mm, ISO 200, f/7.1@1/160 sec, manual exposure.
OK, perhaps this is unfair to those of you in somewhat more challenging weather environments, but hey, I am just trying to brighten your day. Actually, there have been Kona winds and a lot of clouds and some rain (I know, you feel sorry for us), but there was enough of a break at the end of the day yesterday to allow this image. I like it. I hope you do also.

Greenlake Sunrise

Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-200mm lens, f/4.2 at 1/60 sec ISO 800

Winter in Seattle often provides moments of sublime color amidst the often gray and overcast days. My wife Karin is the sunrise photography expert in our family, being an early morning rower, but this is my attempt to catch up with her wonderful work. We are off to Kauai for a week, so I hope to find some interesting posts.
